The students task was to design 3 book covers for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Novel “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Novel summary was given to the students, so that they could familiarize themselves with the content of the novel. Students had to work within the limitations of a specific grid template prepared for this assignment. Template contained a grid that students used to place the color.
Students had to investigate how different hue combinations and formal composition can change or enhance the communication of their chosen narrative concept. Their concepts should be based off of one particular aspect, character or event in the story, acting as a preview and not an overview. Students were encouraged to visualize the essence of the story through color and composition. They could use only two hues and all tones that can be created by mixing those two hues. Students could also add black and/or white to the 2 base hues, however they had to use two hue blends (colors) in each cover design. Since the story is about one man with two opposing personalities the two base colors should be contrasting colors.
At least one of the following contrasts has to be present in each composition:
Contrast of saturation
Contrast in value (light and dark)
Contrast of hue
Complementary contrast
Warm/cold contrast
Students had to be aware of other aspects/qualities of color that could visually link to the story:
environment and space (London in fog, night)
dimensional (distance, 3 dimensional objects such as a stairway etc.)
