Choose one richly detailed source image related to a place . Look for the IDEAL VIEW for compositional effect front, top side, profile. Photocopy, scan, or download them. Print out in 3 sizes small, medium, and large. Next move from the image to the drawing.
Simplify the image on your tracing pad in several consecutive steps. Look for basic shapes that make up the image. Redraw the image by breaking it down to pieces of dots, lines and shapes your STANDARD PARTS. Rebuild the image from pieces by allowing negative space. Interpret repeating elements as patterns. Interpret light and shade inventively.
Do not copy, don’t be a slave to the reference image. Instead, re-interpret the image by repeating visual units devised by you. Do not draw outlines, silhouettes of the image. Instead create a surface pattern by distributing black and white patches.
Which standard parts pure lines or a combination of dots + lines? Draw with a STYLE that can serve as a common expression to several objects combined in a single composition by repeating features across all. Ink your drawings. Be selective when placing down ink.
